Multicultural weddings are some of the most exciting celebrations to photograph. With different traditions, families and generations coming together, there is often so much happening throughout the day — and so many meaningful moments beyond the obvious ones.
Jess and Pramesh's wedding at Bredenbury Court was a beautiful example of this. Their celebrations brought together British and Indian traditions, from the colour, music and dancing of Pramesh's arrival to their outdoor Hindu ceremony and the quieter moments of their families embracing each other's traditions.
For me, photographing a fusion wedding isn't simply about capturing each tradition as it happens. It's about noticing the people, relationships and little moments happening around them too.
Capturing the energy without interrupting it
Pramesh's arrival was full of music, dancing and movement. Rather than directing what was happening, I could move amongst their family and friends and photograph the celebration as it naturally unfolded.
This is where my documentary approach really comes into its own. I want the photographs to feel like being back in the middle of the celebration, rather than looking at something that was created for the camera.
Photographing the traditions and the people
Of course, the important traditions deserve to be beautifully documented, but I'm equally interested in everything happening around them.
A parent watching from the side, different generations dancing together, an embrace between family members or someone's reaction during the ceremony can become just as meaningful as the main event.
Jess and Pramesh's wedding was full of these moments, particularly as their two families came together throughout the celebrations.
A beautiful outdoor Hindu ceremony
Their Hindu ceremony took place outside in the gardens at Bredenbury Court, surrounded by their family and friends.
It gave me the opportunity to capture both the beautiful details and traditions of the ceremony and the reactions and interactions happening around them.
Relaxed photography for multicultural & fusion weddings
Every multicultural wedding is different, which is exactly why I don't approach them with a fixed formula.
Before the wedding, I'll take the time to understand the traditions and moments that are particularly important to you and your families. On the day itself, my approach is relaxed and unobtrusive, documenting everything naturally while gently stepping in when a little direction is helpful.
